Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT)™ is an advanced manual therapy technique designed to identify and address muscular imbalances. MAT is a system, as well as thought-process, based upon the idea that muscle tightness is secondary to muscle weakness. In contrast, many techniques in physical medicine are based upon trying to decrease tightness through stretching, massaging, or “releasing” tissues, assuming that tightness is the primary problem. From the MAT perspective, muscle tightness can develop as a reaction to the presence of muscle inhibition and weakness.
Muscles commonly lose their efficiency and become inhibited due to stress, injury, and over-use. To compensate, other muscles over-work and can become chronically strained. Over time, complex compensations and imbalances can ensue, contributing to pain and faulty movement patterns. Thorough range of motion and isolated muscle tests are performed to specifically identify inhibited muscles. Once identified, muscles are precisely palpated at their attachment points to restore proper communication between the muscles and the nervous system. The goal of the techniques is to improve the balance and efficiency of the muscle system prior to exercise and activity.

John Fosty is our Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT) Practitioner. He received his specialist certification in Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT) in 2017 and his RxMAT certification in 2021. He is ecstatically pleased to offer the newest form of MAT, the NueX MAT.

This MAT form uses electrostimulation along with rehabilitative exercises on targeted dysfunctional muscles and associated nerves to help establish a new muscle motor pattern.

Once the new muscle motor pattern is established, it must be practiced and repeated over time to replace the faulty compensatory pattern and restore the proper movement pattern as the default. This muscle re-training allows for the restoration of optimal muscle range of contraction, thus allowing the client to gain more strength, stability and greater flexibility. The ultimate result allows the patient to become more active with minimal pain. If you are looking for a long-term solution to muscle pain, MAT could be the game changer for you.

When John is not working on muscle activation techniques he can be found enjoying walks in the park while holding hands with his girlfriend, Lorrie.
